Fit Beyond Cancer strives to reach out to cancer patients and provide them with the tools to a fit, healthy lifestyle both during and after cancer treatment. We encourage patients to take an active part in their wellness by becoming and staying active.
What we do:
Fit Beyond Cancer distributes wellness packets through physicians and other organizations to cancer patients that include a pedometer, water bottle, hat, exercise band and information on the benefits of exercise during and after cancer treatments.
Why give out packets:
Research has shown that exercise can benefit cancer patients both during and after cancer treatments with the recommendation of their doctors. These packets give the patient the tools and information needed to become and stay active. The pedometer is a very important part of the packet and can play a major role in keeping activity levels up. Research has also shown that people who wear pedometers get more exercise than those encouraged to exercise but not wear a pedometer.
A message from the founder:
HI! I am the founder of Fit Beyond Cancer, Lori Campbell. I was diagnosed with AML, which is a type of leukemia in April of 2009. I spent 25 days in UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill and 4 subsequent visits for follow-up treatments. During this time, I continued to remain active. With my experience as a personal trainer and encouragement from my doctors, my goal was to keep moving. The doctors said it definitely benefited my recovery. I want others to know that they too can benefit from remaining active both during and after treatments.
